Equipment

Ingredients

  • 200 g block feta cheese crumbled (7 oz)
  • 2 roasted red peppers jarred, drained and patted dry
  • 1 small fresh red chili seeds removed (or 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2-3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil plus more for serving
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cream cheese or strained Greek yogurt optional

For serving

  • warm pita bread
  • extra olive oil and red chili flakes for garnish

Instructions

  • Drain and pat dry the roasted red peppers. Excess liquid makes the spread watery.
  • Add feta, peppers, chili, garlic, lemon juice, and cream cheese (if using) to a food processor.
  • Pulse to break everything down. With the processor running, drizzle in olive oil until the spread reaches your preferred texture — slightly chunky or fully smooth.
  • Taste and adjust for heat and acidity. Feta is salty; taste before adding any salt.
  • Transfer to a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil, top with red chili flakes and dried oregano. Serve immediately or refrigerate up to 3 days.

Notes

Use block feta for the creamiest result — not pre-crumbled.
Bring refrigerated tirokafteri to room temperature before serving.
Heat level is easily adjusted: use more or fewer chili seeds, or swap fresh chili for red pepper flakes.
No food processor? Mash feta with a fork, finely chop peppers and garlic, and combine. The texture will be more rustic — which many people prefer.
